Everyday Except Christmas

In Sussex, vegetables loaded on to lorry to be driven through night to Covent Garden. Lighted towns at night as lorry drives through. Covent Garden, market silent and empty. Lorries driving in and unloaded. Stall holders begin to appear, prepare their displays. Flowers, fruit, vegetables being unpacked. The flower market, men with trolleys. Setting up displays. 4.30 a.m. all is ready in the flower market, men take break in cafe near market. Scenes inside cafe, market people and odd down-and-outs who frequent cafe seen. Dawn, stalls go up all around outside courtyard. Trade buyers arrive and inspect fruit, vegetables etc. Porters carry away loads on their heads. The last remaining woman porter, Alice, at work. Street traders load their barrows. Men carry boxes of goods to waiting vans. 10.30 a.m., rush is over, some of the porter's take things easy, Alice seen resting. Late in the morning come the old ladies who sell flowers in the street, looking for cheap flowers. By 11.00 a.m. only rubbish left. "Happy Wanderer's" street band playing (1287-1428). Lorries loaded with goods for out of town. Long distance lorries leave, faces of porters, stall holders etc. Work goes on preparing for next night's market.
